the Omar Majeed DIY extraveganza

nothing is my middle name

Musical snakes and ladders

Gilded/edge is not only a zine, but a record label for my own output, and collaborations with musician friends. Like Desk Publishing, the literary equivalent, it aims to release music that otherwise wouldn’t get a forum. Gilded/edge is the home of Jazz Mags, Vibe Destroyer, and other gentler disasters…

I’m particularly inspired by the poetic songwriting of Leonard Cohen, the post punk gloom of Joy Division, the melancholy ambiences of Grouper, and the frenetic creativity of Daniel Johnston.

Jazz Mags were an art project that went too far

my earlier projects are on bandcamp under my own name

DISCOGRAPHY/LIST OF PROJECTS INVOLVED IN

New Teen Pop Sensation: Founded in 2001, New Teen Pop Sensation was the ironic name for a barely heard electroacoustic composition project Omar Majeed started when he was seventeen, and a few CD-Rs were on sale or return in Phoenix records, Hereford, for a while. Really should have sent this stuff to John Peel while I had the chance but was nervous it wasn’t good enough.

Giggleskip and the Rainbow Twats / windfall pears: unreleased and mostly unrecorded/theoretical collaboration with Georgia Hutchinson and Iain Mackay

Kid Sister Phoebe: Tape only release of DIY recordings led by Iain Mackay, Omar appears on several tracks.

Jetta: Proto sad light lofi recordings, stocked sale and return at Banquet Records, Kingston

Irons: Omar provided briefly successful organ accompaniment for Josh Hight’s (P.I.N.E.S.) shoegaze project, for 2 gigs in London.

Sad Light: Long term lofi bedroom indie-pop project of sad songs of Omar’s own devising roughly performed and expediently recorded mostly direct to laptop internal mic, with a little pathos, and a few covers including inspiration such as Daniel Johnston and Casiotone for the Painfully Alone.

oJ: One-off (?) electronic collaboration with sculptor Jamie Titterton

Nudibranch: Garage punk project with Bizzy Campbell and Tom Rees, only audio was from the last practice before gig at Reet Petite (video clips from gig filmed by Sam Proctor with an app)

Marc Reeves: Marc Reeves solo album on Gilded Edge, lo-gaze riffs in front of tv

Majeed Family Band: Three albums in 3 years with Bizzy and Charlotte

Jazz Mags: After securing a Covid Composer grant from sound and music, Omar formed this jazz/punk influenced band of miscreants with Marc Reeves on guitar, Bizzy Campbell on Bass, and John Burrage on drums. Jazz Mags recorded their album Stick Together with Corin Myatt at KJM studios in record time; after 17 weeks of rehearsals and a couple short days recording the instruments live with vocal overdubs. Jazz Mags played a handful of gigs over two years at Babar Cafe [RIP], Loft Cinema[also RIP], and Courtyard Theatre where they were opening up for a subtitled Swedish language movie “We Are the Best” selected by Radix Film Club. Various drummers included Tom Rees, Ian James, and Dave Savagar.

OM-Z: alternate electronic alias for Omar after the New Teen Pop Sensation name had worn somewhat thin.

Not Jim Smith: Collaborative improv folk/jazz noise with this underground legend

Tardigrade: electroacoustic remixes with Procrastinatrix’s Toby Godden

010 Surrender: Electroacoustic ambient project with Raymond Gordon

Imagine: Believe: Focus: Succeed: Improvised noise with drummer/guitarist Ian James

Vibe Destroyer: especially short-lived noise project with Russell Taysom & Ella “Girl from Greggs”, joined on drums for unreleased Victory gig by Ian James.

DJ Grinmer – one off noise performance at The Spread Eagle with Not Jim Smith on bass.

oms – post Sad Light melancholia / piano improvisations from Omar
